The Rebel Reef: Seeds of Hope

The Rebel Reef is an award-winning short documentary that follows Christian, the only divemaster in Tela, Honduras, after he survives a near-death experience that awakens questions about nature, healing, and the limits of both.

As Executive Producer, I helped shape the film’s human-centered narrative to anchor Tela’s extraordinary environmental significance in personal story. Through Christian’s journey of perseverance, identity, and pride, the film transforms a remote coral ecosystem into an emotional landscape audiences can connect to and care about.

Under my leadership, the project won multiple grants and awards, which not only brought the film to life but also helped fund the creation of Tela’s first living coral biobank—the first on mainland Honduras—protecting irreplaceable coral genetics and supporting the reef’s long-term survival.

Impact: Beyond its environmental contributions, The Rebel Reef helped elevate Tela’s story onto the international stage, bringing global visibility to a reef—and a community—that had long gone unseen. By documenting Christian’s voice and lived experience, the film affirmed the value of local knowledge and stewardship, fostering pride within the community and reinforcing that their stories, their reef, and their role as its guardians matter. In doing so, the project strengthened both conservation outcomes and cultural identity—demonstrating that protecting ecosystems begins by honoring the people who call them home.
