Sanctuary Guardians Regenerative Tourism Training Modules

Sanctuary Guardians is a regenerative tourism training program designed to mobilize visitors and local businesses to actively protect the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Developed by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, the program transforms tourism into a tool for ecosystem recovery by equipping stakeholders with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to support restoration and sustainable practices.

As the lead storyteller, environmental consultant, and local liaison, I developed interactive training modules with measurable learning outcomes that formed the backbone of the program’s educational platform. I produced underwater and on-land video content—including stakeholder interviews, organizational features, science explainers, and cinematic b-roll—and blended science, policy, and personal narrative into a cohesive outreach campaign. I also worked directly with commercial ocean users—including fishing guides, tourism operators, hotels, restaurants, and local leaders—to foster buy-in and help convert frontline businesses into invested partners in regenerative tourism.

Impact: Sanctuary Guardians helped launch a first-of-its-kind regenerative tourism movement in the Florida Keys, bringing historically disconnected groups—tourists, businesses, and local stakeholders—into shared stewardship of their marine environment. By creating accessible pathways for education and involvement, the program transformed awareness into action, empowering participants to contribute directly to reef protection and restoration. The initiative not only established a scalable model for regenerative travel, but also strengthened community ownership and pride—proving that when people see their stories and livelihoods reflected in conservation, they become its most powerful champions.
